Pastoral Support

Building Our Thriving School Community

At The Whitstable School, we believe that every child deserves to feel seen, supported and ready to thrive. That's why each year group is at the heart of its own vibrant community, led by a dedicated team of staff whose primary focus is your child's holistic development – both academically and personally.

Ready to Learn Tutors: Your Child's Daily Connection

At the heart of our daily pastoral support are our Ready to Learn Tutors. Your child will meet with their tutor every morning, creating a consistent and familiar point of contact right at the start of each day. This dedicated time allows tutors to check in, offer guidance, and ensure students are well-prepared and in the right mindset for learning. Our tutors are an absolutely vital part of our pastoral system; they are a consistent adult presence who often get to know your child best on a daily basis. They are the essential link between parents and the school, often the first port of call for any queries or concerns, working closely with families to ensure your child is happy, feels a strong sense of belonging, and is truly thriving throughout their secondary school journey.

Heads of Year: Nurturing Growth and Resilience

Our Heads of Year are at the forefront of this, ensuring that every student is nurtured to build strong resilience, develop genuine kindness, foster a deep sense of self-worth, and achieve well in all areas of school life. These leadership teams work tirelessly, often collaborating with external specialists, to provide expert guidance and a wide range of mental health and well-being initiatives. Our comprehensive Head of Year workshops and intervention programme further supports this, offering personalised care that champions each student's emotional strength. Heads of Year are constantly present in classrooms, fostering positive relationships and reinforcing our high expectations, not just for behaviour, but for every student to feel valued and engaged.

Pastoral Support Managers: Dedicated Support and Strong Relationships

Supporting them are our Pastoral Support Managers, who are invaluable non-teaching members of staff. This allows them the time to truly build positive relationships with both students and parents, creating a trusted link between home and school. They are instrumental in supporting all students, particularly those who benefit from additional guidance, helping them to develop strong character, nurture their kindness towards others, and strengthen their self-worth. By ensuring our standards are consistently maintained, they contribute to a respectful and harmonious community where everyone can learn and flourish.

The core aim of our community structure is to create a smaller, more intimate hub within our larger school – a place where closer, positive relationships can blossom between key staff and students. This ensures that every child's individual needs are met, providing a supportive environment where students are empowered to build resilience, practice kindness, grow their self-worth, and ultimately achieve their full potential within a strong, caring school community.
